Does Range of Motion Matter for Glute Growth?

Use the largest controlled range of motion that fits your anatomy, mobility, and exercise setup. Research generally favors full over partial training for strength and lower-body growth, but “full” means controlled—not forcing depth you cannot own.

What full range means

A systematic review and meta-analysis found that full-range resistance training generally produced better strength and lower-body hypertrophy outcomes than partial-range training. The evidence covers multiple exercises and populations, so it supports a broad principle rather than one mandatory squat depth.

Useful range ends where position breaks down. In a Romanian deadlift, that may be when the pelvis can no longer move backward without the spine rounding. In a split squat, it may be before the pelvis twists or the front heel lifts.

Lengthened and shortened glute positions

Squats, lunges, step-ups, and hinges challenge the glutes in relatively lengthened hip-flexed positions. Hip thrusts and bridges emphasize force near full hip extension. A balanced plan can include both rather than treating one position as universally superior.

Progress range gradually. Adding depth while removing load is still progression when it produces a more controlled, repeatable movement.

Do I have to squat below parallel?

No single depth fits everyone. Use the deepest position you can control with stable feet, knees, pelvis, and torso, then progress from there.

Are partial reps useless?

No. Partial reps can have specific uses, but they should not automatically replace controlled full-range training when full range is appropriate and available.
