A true one-rep max test means loading a bar until a single rep fails, which is exactly the scenario where a missed lift is most likely to cause injury — especially without a spotter or safety bars. It also takes a dedicated, well-rested session to do properly; testing a max on a fatigued or untested lift tends to underestimate what you can actually lift.
An estimate from a submaximal set avoids both problems. You get a usable number from a set you were already doing as part of normal training, at a weight low enough that a missed final rep is a non-event. For programming purposes — picking weights for future training blocks — the estimate is close enough to be just as useful as a tested max, without the added risk.
Using the loading table
Once you have an estimated 1RM, the loading table converts it into a working weight for any rep target. If a session calls for a set of 5, find the 5-rep row and use that weight; if the next block shifts to sets of 10, switch to the 10-rep row instead of recalculating by hand.
Because the estimate itself can drift over time as you get stronger or more fatigued, treat the table as a starting point for a training block rather than a fixed number — recalculate every few weeks using a recent hard set so your working weights keep tracking your actual strength.

What is the Epley formula?
The Epley formula estimates your true one-rep max (1RM) from a set taken with lighter weight for multiple reps: weight × (1 + reps/30). It's one of the most widely used estimation formulas in strength training because it only needs two numbers — the weight used and the reps completed — and stays reasonably accurate across the rep ranges lifters train in most.
Why does the estimate get less accurate at higher rep counts?
The relationship between reps and %1RM is roughly linear at low reps but flattens out as reps climb, so formulas built on that linear assumption start to overstate the true max past about 10–12 reps. A 20-rep set fed into the Epley formula will typically produce a number well above what you could actually lift once.
How do I use the loading table to program a workout?
Each row converts your estimated 1RM into the weight you should load for a given rep target. If your program calls for a set of 8, use the 8-rep row — roughly 80% of your estimated max — rather than guessing a weight and hoping the reps work out.
Does this replace actually testing my one-rep max?
No. A true 1RM test means loading a bar until you fail, which carries real injury risk without a spotter or safety bars and takes a dedicated session to do properly. This estimate is meant for programming your training weights day to day — if you need a certified max for a meet or a coaching benchmark, that still calls for a supervised test.
